The 2026 CX-5 is the third generation of Mazda's compact SUV and its best-selling vehicle in Canada. It is 114 mm (4.5 in) longer than the outgoing model, with almost all of the gain in the wheelbase, which opens up rear legroom and cargo space. Every Canadian CX-5 uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive. The lineup runs from the GX at $36,300 to the GT with the Premium Package at $46,700. Space figures come from Zack and Andrea Spencer's MotorMouth review notes and are converted from inches and cubic feet; prices and equipment are from Mazda Canada.

What Canadian shoppers ask

The questions CX-5 shoppers bring to the showroom.

Drawn from 5,527 CX-5 comments posted since 2023 on the MotorMouth YouTube channel. Question themes sit apart from verified vehicle facts and help prepare a more useful test drive.

01

How much bigger is the new CX-5?

Space, cargo and rear seats come up in 232 comments. Mazda Canada says the 2026 CX-5 is 114 mm (4.5 in) longer, with almost all of it in the wheelbase, plus wider rear door openings and a lower load floor. MotorMouth's review notes list 1,013 mm (39.9 in) of second-row legroom and 954 L (33.7 cu ft) of cargo space behind the second row, 1,883 L (66.5 cu ft) overall.

Take this to your test drive

Bring car seats and your usual cargo, and sit behind your own driving position to check the rear legroom.

02

How do the new screen and controls work?

Interior and tech come up in 1,503 comments, more than any other theme. A 12.9-inch touchscreen with Google built-in is standard, and the GT Premium Package brings a 15.6-inch screen, Mazda's largest yet. MotorMouth's review notes explain that most functions now run through the screen, with a tab along the bottom for climate, heated seats and the heated steering wheel, volume on the screen or the steering wheel, and voice commands through Google built-in, which comes with a one-year trial.

Take this to your test drive

Set the temperature, seat heat and defrost while parked and again on the move, and try the voice commands before you decide.

03

What does it cost?

Price and value come up in 653 comments. Mazda Canada lists the 2026 CX-5 at $36,300 for the GX, $39,200 for the GS and $42,200 for the GT, with the GT Panoramic Roof Package at $44,200 and the GT Premium Package at $46,700. Freight and PDE add $2,195.

Take this to your test drive

Ask for the all-in price with freight and fees, and list the features you want to see whether the GS covers them or you need a GT.

04

Is a hybrid coming?

Hybrid and electric power come up in 626 comments. The 2026 CX-5 launches with the 2.5-litre gas engine only. MotorMouth's review notes say a hybrid is coming for 2027, Mazda's own system built around the new Skyactiv-Z engine. One viewer welcomed the plan: "Very happy that cx5 is hybrid not PHEV. Very important model for Mazda."

Take this to your test drive

If you are deciding between buying now and waiting, ask the dealer what timing and pricing Mazda Canada has confirmed for the hybrid.

05

Is the engine enough, and what does it use?

Engine and power come up in 955 comments and fuel economy in 170. The 2.5-litre four makes 187 hp and 186 lb-ft through a six-speed automatic, and Mazda says it has been recalibrated for sharper response and a quieter cruise. Natural Resources Canada rates it at 9.9 L/100 km (24 mpg US) city, 7.9 L/100 km (30 mpg US) highway and 9.0 L/100 km (26 mpg US) combined.

Take this to your test drive

Take it up a highway on-ramp with passengers on board, and try Sport mode to feel the difference in response.

06

Is it ready for a Canadian winter?

Winter driving and all-wheel drive come up in 107 comments. Every Canadian CX-5 has i-Activ all-wheel drive and heated front seats, which MotorMouth's review notes point out are standard in Canada. The GS adds a heated steering wheel and front wiper de-icer, the GT adds heated rear outboard seats, and ground clearance is up to 208 mm (8.2 in), with an Off-Road drive mode and a temporary spare tire.

Take this to your test drive

Budget for a set of winter tires, and ask which trim adds the heated steering wheel and rear seats you want.

07

Does the design stand out?

Styling comes up in 1,115 comments. The new CX-5 takes on a more chiseled look with a wider stance and angular lighting, close in feel to the CX-70 and CX-90, and the MAZDA lettering across the liftgate replaces the badge. Soul Red Crystal and a new Navy Blue Mica are among the colours. One longtime owner wrote: "Thanks for the video. The CX-5 looks great."

Take this to your test drive

See it in daylight in the colour you want, and compare the GS 19-inch wheels with the black metallic wheels and signature lighting on the GT.

08

Which trim should I choose?

The GS adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, a 10-way power driver's seat with memory, a power liftgate and a head-up display. The GT adds leather, ventilated front seats, 12-speaker Bose audio and adaptive LED lighting, and the Premium Package brings the 15.6-inch screen, a 360-degree camera, a hands-free liftgate and Cruise and Traffic Support. A current owner looking at the new model wrote: "My current CX-5 lease is up in 2026, so I am excited by this new model. I really like what they have done with it, and I love that the seats seem more comfortable."

Take this to your test drive

Sit in a GS and a GT back to back to compare the seats and upholstery, and decide whether you need the Premium Package features.
