What Canadian shoppers ask

The questions Highlander shoppers bring to the showroom.

Drawn from 4,238 Highlander comments posted since 2023 on the MotorMouth YouTube channel. Question themes sit apart from verified vehicle facts and help prepare a more useful test drive.

01

Gas or hybrid?

Hybrid and electric power is the biggest theme, raised in 1,119 comments. The gas Highlander uses a 265 hp 2.4-litre turbo four with an eight-speed automatic; the hybrid combines a 2.5-litre four with electric motors for 243 hp and a combined rating of 6.7 L/100 km (35 mpg US), according to Toyota Canada. Natural Resources Canada rates the gas Highlander at 9.9 L/100 km (24 mpg US) combined. One family made the call early: "We made our decision a few months ago and have ordered the Highlander Hybrid XLE. The trim level is just great for us."

02

What does it cost?

Price and value come up in 685 comments. Toyota Canada lists the 2026 Highlander from $51,285 for the gas XLE to $58,986 for the gas Platinum, and the Highlander Hybrid from $54,485 for the XLE to $61,736 for the Platinum.

Take this to your test drive

Ask for the all-in price with freight, PDI and fees, and which grade gives you the seating and screen you want.

Is it the right size for my family?

Space, cargo and rear seats come up in 280 comments. XLE and Limited gas models seat eight with a second-row bench, while the XSE and Platinum seat seven with captain's chairs. Toyota Canada lists up to 2,387 L (84.3 cu ft) of cargo space behind the front row. "Our Highlander Hybrid is a perfect family vehicle for our 2 kids and a dog. Goldilocks size and very comfortable make it great for road trips and the efficiency means it can double as a commuter."

Take this to your test drive

Bring car seats and your usual cargo, and try getting into the third row with the second row in place.

04

How much can it tow?

Towing comes up in 115 comments. Toyota Canada rates the gas Highlander at 5,000 lb (2,268 kg) with Trailer Sway Control, and the Highlander Hybrid at 3,500 lb (1,588 kg).

Take this to your test drive

Bring the weight of your trailer or boat, and ask the dealer to confirm the hitch and wiring that come with the grade you choose.

05

Is it good in winter?

All-wheel drive and winter driving come up in 115 comments. Every Canadian Highlander has all-wheel drive: Dynamic Torque AWD on the gas XLE, Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Driveline Disconnect on the XSE, Limited and Platinum, and an electronic on-demand system with a rear electric motor on the hybrid.

Take this to your test drive

Ask which AWD system the grade you want uses, and budget for a set of winter tires.

06

08

What about the electric Highlander?

Toyota Canada has revealed a next-generation, battery-electric Highlander with three rows, 77.0 or 95.8 kWh batteries, a NACS charging port and up to 511 km (318 mi) of estimated range. It is assembled in Georgetown, Kentucky, and is expected on sale in early 2027, with pricing to be announced closer to then.
