What Canadian shoppers ask

The questions Golf shoppers bring to the showroom.

Drawn from 1,421 comments on MotorMouth's Golf GTI and Golf R videos posted since 2023 on the MotorMouth YouTube channel. Question themes sit apart from verified vehicle facts and help prepare a more useful test drive.

01

GTI or Golf R?

Engine and power come up in 154 comments. Natural Resources Canada lists both 2026 models with a 2.0-litre turbo four and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The GTI is front-wheel drive and runs on regular fuel; the Golf R has 4MOTION all-wheel drive and uses premium fuel. MotorMouth's notes on the 2025 models describe the GTI's VAQ limited-slip differential and the Golf R's rear torque-vectoring differential, drive profiles and drift mode. One viewer wrote: "Not gonna lie, the 2025 Golf R is seriously tempting: clean design, all-wheel drive, and just the right balance of power and practicality. Might be the closest thing to a perfect daily sports car out there."

Take this to your test drive

Drive both on the same route if you can, including a highway merge and a few corners, and decide whether the R's extra power and all-wheel drive are worth it to you.

02

What does it cost?

Price and value come up in 291 comments. Volkswagen Canada has not published 2026 Golf GTI and Golf R pricing yet. One running-cost difference you can check now: Natural Resources Canada lists the GTI on regular fuel and the Golf R on premium.

Take this to your test drive

Ask the dealer for the all-in price, including freight and PDI, and which options and packages are available on the 2026 model.

03

What changed with the update?

Styling comes up in 200 comments. When Zack and Andrea reviewed the refreshed 2025 models, the GTI had a new front bumper, new colours, wheels and accents, and the Golf R had new headlamps and bumper, an illuminated front logo and standard 19-inch wheels that are 20% lighter than before. A viewer wrote: "Great color choice - Golf looks so fresh."

See it in daylight in the colour you want, and compare the GTI and Golf R wheel and trim choices.

04

Did they bring back buttons?

Interior and tech come up in 185 comments. With the 2025 update, real buttons replaced the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel, a 12.9-inch touchscreen with Volkswagen's faster new infotainment system became standard, and grey trim replaced much of the piano black, according to MotorMouth's review notes. The GTI also gained a ventilated 15-watt wireless charger. A Golf R owner wrote: "I own a 2023 Golf R and the changes to the 2025 are welcomed."

Take this to your test drive

Try the steering wheel buttons and the touchscreen on the test drive, and pair your phone.

05

Can I still get a manual?

The transmission comes up in 70 comments. Natural Resources Canada lists the 2026 GTI and Golf R with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic only; MotorMouth's notes say the manual was dropped for 2025. If you want a manual, Natural Resources Canada lists the 2026 Jetta GLI, with its 2.0-litre turbo, with a six-speed manual.

Take this to your test drive

Try the paddle shifters and drive modes on the test drive, and if a manual matters to you, drive a GLI too.

06

How do they handle winter?

Winter driving and all-wheel drive come up in 59 comments. The Golf R has 4MOTION all-wheel drive and the GTI is front-wheel drive. In MotorMouth's review notes on the 2025 models, the GTI has 124 mm (4.9 in) of ground clearance and the Golf R 112 mm (4.4 in), and the Golf R came on summer performance tires.

Take this to your test drive

Reset the trip computer at the start of your test drive and include some highway driving to see the figure on your own route.

08

Is it practical enough as a daily driver?

Space and rear seats come up in 27 comments. MotorMouth's review notes on the 2025 models list 1,046 mm (41.2 in) of front legroom, 889 mm (35.0 in) of rear legroom and 564 L (19.9 cu ft) of cargo space behind the rear seats, or 977 L (34.5 cu ft) with them folded. Zack and Andrea, who own a GTI, describe it as a great blend of performance and everyday versatility.
